Gender Equality

Equality is a core value of the European Union, a fundamental right and a key driver of economic growth and social well-being. However, the European Union’s energy supply sector remains unequal.

The EU’s New Gender Equality Strategy puts pressure on policy makers to understand and address women’s needs and abilities to be active in the energy sector.

The ASSET study aims to quantify as accurately as possible the status of gender equality in the energy sector.

A Gender-Disaggregated Dataset on the Employment of Women in the Energy Sector

According to the collected information, the energy sector remains dominated by male workers, who in 2019 represented 80% of the total workforce. Our experts sought to understand women’s share in the STEM sector (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and the historical trends of their participation in it. They also investigated the influence on the statistics of various cross-categories, such as energy subsector, employment status, education level, etc.

The main takeaways include:

  • Existing gender repartition metrics within the electricity sector and fossil fuel industries
  • Conclusions from exclusive interviews with utilities, ministries and system operators
  • Four steps to improve gender diversity in regulatory plan
  • The recommendation to continue this type of study along with improvements to data collection and the analysis process to support policy measures
