The ENERGY STAR® Program, jointly managed by the U.S. EPA and DOE, is a nationwide symbol of energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR enables organizations to compare an individual building’s energy use to similar buildings nationwide and use this information to identify and prioritize improvements.
In addition, more than 50 state and local governments in North America now mandate that companies disclose their building energy and water consumption through ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager.
ENGIE Impact simplifies the benchmarking and annual compliance process through our automated data feed to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®. Our team helps companies benchmark their portfolio-building energy consumption, comply with benchmarking mandates, improve site performance, and certify top-performing buildings.
What is ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), promotes the environmental and economic benefits of energy-efficient products and practices. ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager tool captures cost and consumption information from a given building’s utility bills. Using this information, ENERGY STAR then measures the performance of a building against the national average for similar building types. Depending on the main function of a building, ENERGY STAR uses the appropriate algorithm to apply a rating from zero to one hundred.
ENERGY STAR Benchmarking
Benchmarking is the process of measuring and comparing the energy performance of a building against similar buildings, historical consumption, or industry standard performance levels. Companies use this information to:
Calculate carbon emissions
Identify opportunities to save energy and reduce costs
Prioritize energy efficiency projects
Track and report progress
Earn recognition
Comply with local and state laws
ENGIE Impact is one of the largest service providers nationwide, benchmarking over 40,000 buildings through ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® each month.
ENGIE Impact sets up and maintains each site in Portfolio Manager and simplifies the submission of portfolio energy and water data. Every month, audited consumption data collected through our expense & data management system is automatically exchanged with Portfolio Manager via API, eliminating manual processing and protecting data integrity.
Reporting and Compliance
As of March 2024, more than 50 state and local governments across North America mandate that existing buildings report their energy and water consumption through ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® annually. Specific requirements and deadlines can be complex and vary significantly by jurisdiction. Failure to comply or missing a deadline may result in penalties and fines for organizations, making it critical for companies to understand and prepare for these requirements.
ENGIE Impact can help your company simplify the annual benchmarking compliance process. We file annual benchmarking reports nationwide and have Certified Energy Managers and Professional Engineers who can provide third party data verification where required.
ENERGY STAR Certification
ENERGY STAR certified buildings use 35% less energy, generate 35% fewer GHG emissions, cost $0.54 less per square foot to operate, and have higher occupancy rates compared to peers. More than 80 percent of U.S. households recognize the ENERGY STAR label as a symbol for energy efficiency.
Once you’ve benchmarked your sites, those that have earned an ENERGY STAR score of 75 or greater are eligible to apply for certification.
ENGIE Impact has completed over 465 ENERGY STAR certifications on behalf of our clients. Our team assists companies throughout the application process: verifying the score, completing the application, sending a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) to validate and sign the application, and formally submitting it to the EPA for review on your behalf.
For sites that have not achieved a score of 75 or greater, our Energy Managers can recommend activities to raise the score.
It's important to note that ENGIE Impact is an independent service provider and not directly affiliated with ENERGY STAR.
